The correct approach to tax investigations starts from the outset.

Investigations can be avoided if you stay on top of your tax affairs through timely filing of complete and correct returns. Problems tend to arise if estimated figures are used or if returns are submitted with errors and/or past the filing deadline.

HMRC have access to various income sources ranging from bank interest details to information on property disposals. If you are unfortunate enough to get an enquiry, it is important that this is treated seriously with adequate advice taken.

The response to an enquiry letter should be prompt and apologetic so any issues can be settled quickly with minimal penalties involved. If the investigations are not treated seriously, HMRC can take a very aggressive stance and it becomes increasingly difficult to get HMRC to backtrack once this approach is taken.
