Just last year, research confirmed that one in five primary and secondary school-aged children in the UK now have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) forming over 1 million people. Moreover, a YouGov poll highlighted that only 27% of teachers had received training in supporting children’s speech, language and communication skills, with the remainder feeling there was a need for further training.

The ability to communicate effectively has a major impact on a child’s happiness and how well they can learn. Good communication helps children to build friendships, express their needs and explain how they are feeling – it is a critical area of a child’s development.

What can cause or exacerbate (the issues)?

There are a variety of conditions that can affect a child’s speech and language development, ranging from autism, selective mutism, stammering, and so much more. We have written a vast amount of information surrounding the various factors that impact a child’s speech – visit www.chatter-bug.com/conditions to learn more.

What are telltale signs of such a condition?

We’re often asked about what to look out for in a child’s speech when considering whether or not they may have a condition that affects their speech. Here are what I believe to be some key signs to look out for…

  • Difficulty understanding your child’s speech
  • Speech sound errors: Incorrect production of speech sounds
  • Stammering: Disruptions in the flow of speech
  • Noticeable frustrations during communication attempts.
  • Social Skills Challenges: Difficulty interacting with others.
  • Regression: Loss of previously acquired skills.
  • Late to talk
  • Family history of speech, language, and Communication difficulties in the family
  • Concerns from others: Worries from teachers, childcare providers, or caregivers about child’s development

What kind of services are available?

At Chatterbug we continue to seek ways in which we can make a difference to the lives of children with SLCN. Therefore we provide a wide range of services with the most up to date evidence and resources available…

Onsite assessments and speech therapy (Schools & nurseries)

We work within various types of education settings to deliver face to face assessments and therapy in an environment the child is comfortable in.

Private client services

If you are seeking a more bespoke service we also provide a private initial assessment and therapy. Our private client services are all inclusive and designed to give you evidence based support without the lengthy waiting times.

Autism Pre-Screenings

If you have reason to believe your child may be autistic but aren’t 100 certain, our Autism Pre-Screening service could be the ideal first step. Our team will send you a questionnaire to complete which will be reviewed by our specialist SLTs who can advise if a full assessment is recommended. We can then advise you whether we feel a full assessment is recommended.

Any DIY recommendations for parents?

Spending time talking with your children, singing songs, reading to/with them – all of this can help. Chatting throughout the day, explaining what you are doing, naming or counting items and introducing different descriptive words. These simple actions will help children to build a better understanding of language and increase their vocabulary. We also offer an on-demand course delivered by our Speech and Language therapist: The Parent’s Guide: Supporting my child with SLCN – Explore it here.

At which point is intervention recommended?

Intervention is recommended as early as possible.  Early interventions can prevent communication challenges leading to challenging behaviour due to the child feeling frustrated.

To support this we offer free virtual sessions where parents can meet with an SLT for advice and guidance.

Chatterbug’s evidence-based approach and commitment to early intervention have supported over 50,000 children in improving their communication skills. Our dedicated team of SLTs and CALS are here to provide the personalised support your child needs to thrive. Whether you’re seeking an initial assessment, regular therapy sessions, autism screening, or comprehensive reviews, Chatterbug offers a warm and effective pathway to enhance your child’s communication abilities.
