On Monday 28th November, Grand Central hosted their Grand Central Wakefield Kirkgate Open Day, in which they unveiled their brand new First Class Lounge.

As part of the Open Day, visitors were able to learn more about how Grand Central runs things, the impact of the pandemic on their services and how they plan to regain the quality that they had before the pandemic, and visitors were also allowed a go on a train simulator which Grand Central have at the Wakefield Kirkgate station. This simulator is used to help train new drivers in a safer and more secure way compared to the usual method. The new First Class lounge is tastefully furnished with a mix of vintage-style sofas, dining room style chairs and high stool seating, all sourced from local suppliers. It provides a unique and welcoming customer experience to all first class ticket holders, and also showcases wall art by local street artists. The lounge really shows how Grand Central are working with the local community and local businesses.

Richard McClean, Managing Director at Grand Central, said: “We are excited to launch our new First Class lounge, which is part of our ongoing investment to improve our customer experience at Wakefield Kirkgate. This investment isn’t just about the station itself, it is a real community occasion, bringing together local suppliers and artists who have helped make this vision a reality for the people of Wakefield. As well as offering a unique space for customers to unwind or prepare for business meetings, it is contributing to the station’s regeneration – to make it a more vibrant, safe and comfortable station for passengers.”
