The West Yorkshire Combined Authority Business Support team has helped local SME’s save over £53,000 in energy bills though the RE:Biz programme.

Based in West Yorkshire and have under 250 employees? Your business can do the same. From consultations and energy audits, to capital grant funding up-to £40,000, there is a wide and flexible range of support – designed to empower your business with resource efficiency.

Let’s take a look at 3 local businesses, and how they utilised LEP business support to streamline their business model.

Abraham Moon – Guiseley-based woollen fabric manufacturer
Our region has always been cutting edge of high-quality wool production, from Titus Salt to Samuel Lister, innovation – especially in textiles – is in our blood.

Abraham Moon carries the torch to this day. So when looking for new, energy efficient practices, they contacted the LEP business support team; and with expert advice, consultations and grant funding, implemented energy-efficient Variable Speed Drive (VSD) motors on to their wool spinning frames. This is forecast to:

  • Save over £10,000 on energy bills.
  • Reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 3 tonnes per year.

Dempsey Dyer– Pontefract-based window and door manufacturer
Since 1977, Dempsey Dyer has been a manufacturer of high-quality windows and doors, serving the trade and commercial sectors with their supply of timber, uPVC, aluminium and composite products.

“We want to be socially responsible as a company so to be able to do that whilst saving  money is a great attraction.” Mark Suaznabar Systems Manager, Dempsey Dyer

Through an initial consultation and free energy audit, recommendations were made and funding secured for two energy and cost saving projects; efficient LED lighting throughout the building – saving an estimated 125,385 kWh of electricity per year and a wood burning heater and fast acting roller shutter doors – saving an estimated 269,073 kwh of gas per year. This equates to total estimated savings of:

  • £26,777 per year on their energy bills.
  • 4 tonnes per year reduction in carbon emissions.

Excellent Relax – Batley-based bed manufacturer
Becoming more efficient without compromising on quality was of upmost importance to this family-run business with a 22-year reputation for attention to detail.

The LEP business support team helped achieve this by developing a two-pronged approach with the company to focus on energy consumption:

Reduction in usage

Transitioning from compressor to a variable speed drive model, massively reducing energy consumption.

Renewable energy sources

Installation of a wood waste heater to reduce gas consumption. Future plans to pursue solar electricity options.

The energy saving projects will help Excellent Relax to:

  • Save an estimated £17,163 per year on their energy bills.
  • Reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 32 tonnes per year.
