Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with nearly 2,000 services a day to more than
500 stations across the North of England. Northern’s ethos is to make a positive impact for the north,
in all it does and for all it serves. As such, being a corporate partner of YABA is a perfect opportunity.

Tony Baxter, regional director at Northern, said: “Representing the communities that we serve is
important to Northern and YABA helps us to do this.

“Our projects include outreach work with communities in areas with a low socio-economic status, to
demonstrate how trains can connect them to employment and education opportunities, and working
with organisations who aim to tackle unemployment, social isolation, crime, and to encourage a social
conscience.”

These projects include supporting the National Citizen Service (NCS) which allows young people to
engage in positive social action. Northern has supported the NCS since 2016; a which scheme
encourages 15–17-year-olds to meet new people, challenge themselves through outdoor activities,
learn to live independently and make a positive impact in their community.

NCS participants receive supported rail travel which helps them to carry out their community activities.
In recent years, we have worked closely with them on projects involving rail safety, anti-trespass
campaigns, sustainability, and education around unwanted sexual behaviour.
